Knitting and Crocheting Rocking Chair Cushions and Pads
If rocking chair cushions can be made by sewing or stapling fabric, there is no reason they can’t be made by knitting or crocheting. In fact there are quite a few books available with patterns for that purpose, and many websites such as ravelry.com that also provide free patterns for knitted or crocheted chair cushions.
Some books will have patterns strictly for knitting cushions, some for crocheting only, and others will include both techniques. Online sites usually have patterns for both techniques, although some may feature one or the other exclusively. While the instructions are not specifically for rocking chair cushions, many of the patterns can be adapted for your rocker.
Instructions for knitting or crocheting chair cushions may also be found in books on hand-making general home decor. Most of the knitted and crocheted cushions which can be used for rocking chairs are of the knife-edge type, but there are a few for box cushions. Different types of closure are illustrated, including envelope cushions, buttons, zippers, etc.
Unfortunately, many patterns of all types stop short of telling you how to measure the rocking chair seat first before beginning to knit or crochet. You are usually given instructions for knitting a cushion in a single size; it never seems to occur to the authors that cushions need instructions for different sizes just like sweaters do! To end up with a cushion that actually fits your rocking chair, you will probably have to adapt the pattern to the size you need.
Another thing that is usually omitted is a set of directions for preparing and inserting the cushion filling. Just as should be done for a sewn rocking chair cushion, you will need to cut the foam insert slightly larger than the finished cover, wrap it with Dacron batting, and insert it into your hand-made rocking chair cushion cover, perhaps with the help of your vacuum cleaner to shrink the foam. Our post on inserting foam into a rocking chair cushion should help with this process.
Rather than showing you a video of someone knitting or crocheting a cushion, we are including here the link to a video of the work of MonikaRose, a woman who both knits and crochets cushion covers. (Embedding of the video is not allowed.) We hope this will be a source of inspiration!
